Farmington Community Library Renovations Begin September 8

A major improvement project gets underway Tuesday, September 8, when Phase One renovations are scheduled to begin at both Farmington Community Library locations.

The work is part of the Library’s Facilities Masterplan and is designed to update aging infrastructure, improve accessibility, and create better spaces for gathering, studying, learning and play.

Both library branches will also be closed September 5–7 for Labor Day weekend, reopening Tuesday as construction begins.

Why it matters: The renovation is more than a cosmetic refresh — it represents a long-term investment in two of the community’s most-used public spaces.

Farmington Hills Residents Asked to Weigh In on Urban Deer

Farmington Hills has joined a regional effort to better understand how residents feel about the growing urban deer population.

The 2026 Deer Management Pulse of the Region Study is open from September 1 through November 1. The survey addresses issues ranging from vehicle collisions and landscaping damage to wildlife health, ecological impacts and community safety.

Resident input will help Southeast Michigan communities evaluate future deer-management strategies.

Farmington Hills Earns Top HEARTSafe Community Recognition

Farmington Hills has officially been designated a HEARTSafe Community, earning the highest level of recognition under the program.

The city met all 13 HEARTSafe criteria and is one of only three Michigan municipalities to achieve that level. Nearly 15% of the city's population received CPR training during the past year, while more than 140 AED locations have been registered throughout the community.

The designation recognizes efforts to improve survival from sudden cardiac arrest through training, public access to AEDs and coordinated emergency response.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND — QUICK HEADS UP

Farmington Hills: City offices are closed Monday, September 7. There will be no garbage, recycling or yard-waste collection Monday, and pickups will run one day behind Tuesday through Saturday.

Farmington: The city's holiday collection schedule says there is no scheduled collection Tuesday following Labor Day, with Wednesday–Friday service delayed one day.

Farmington Community Library: Both branches are closed September 5–7.

Friday, Sept. 4 — Rock Around the Hawk

The popular program for children ages 18 months to 5 years returns with “Studio Almost 4.” Families are encouraged to break out their favorite ’70s-inspired outfits for a disco-themed morning of music, games, crafts and dancing.

Tour artists' studios, meet local creatives, contribute to a community art project and enjoy music and light refreshments.

Saturday, Sept. 5 — Farmington Farmers Market

It’s officially apple time at the Market. Vendors scheduled for September 5 include Odie’s Flowers, R & B Miller and Olive Thyme Catering, with live music from Billy Brandt. The market continues every Saturday through November 7.

A new family attraction arrived just in time for the Labor Day weekend. Little Diggers Farmington officially opened September 3.

The concept centers around an indoor sandbox-style play experience designed for young children who love digging, building and construction-themed play.

🥯 NYC Bagels & Bowls Coming to Grand River

Another breakfast option is headed to Farmington.

NYC Bagels & Bowls is preparing to open at 34635 Grand River Avenue, in the former Joe's Coney Island space.

The planned menu includes bagels, cream cheese spreads, breakfast and lunch offerings, coffee, tea and bowls. The owner told What Now Detroit that the team is targeting an opening around September 15, although that date should be considered tentative until officially confirmed.

Trader Joe's official store page continues to list the Farmington Hills location at 27658 Middlebelt Road as “Coming Soon.”

As of this edition, the company still lists the official opening date as TBD.

Community Learning Spotlight: t.Lab Helps Students Aim Higher

The Garden City-based learning organization combines academic tutoring, technology, mentorship and parent participation to help students reach ambitious educational goals.

Families searching for additional academic support may be interested in t.Lab, a Michigan nonprofit learning organization serving students from pre-kindergarten through the undergraduate level.

Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Garden City, t.Lab describes itself as a high-performance learning laboratory focused on helping students become independent learners, strong leaders and competitive candidates for college and future careers.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

A central part of t.Lab’s approach is teaching students “how to learn.” Tutors, mentors and learning facilitators work with students to build academic skills while encouraging discipline, confidence, independence and personal responsibility.

Students may participate through face-to-face or virtual tutoring sessions, making the program accessible to families beyond its Garden City headquarters.

Parents and guardians also have an active role. Through a program called Parent University, families receive guidance in areas including academic development, college selection, scholarships, career preparation and tracking student progress.

According to figures published by the organization for fiscal year 2024, t.Lab students achieved an average ACT score of 30.5. The organization also reports that its students have earned approximately $23 million in scholarships since 2007.

🎂 Farmington Marks 100 Years as a City in 2026

Here’s a milestone worth remembering.

Farmington was first settled by Arthur Power in 1824. It became an incorporated village in 1867 and officially became a Home Rule City in 1926.

That means 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Farmington's incorporation as a city.

The area has changed enormously over the past century, but downtown Farmington's historic architecture, neighborhoods and community gathering places continue to connect today's city with its past.
